"UNDENTED SPIRIT"

Mary Oestereicher Hamill

In this assignment, I imbued the style and way of a video and photography multimedia artist, Mary Oestereicher Hamill to create a screen design. The content conveyed by Madam Hamill has always in concern of the poor and forgotten.

I use the way she present her shots and recordings by different but similar-in-a-way theme. I chose stray or wild dogs as the center of the design as they share resemblance of regard by the society. In this design, I wish to show as what Madam Hamill shown. Forgotten and shunned by many, they still found their place in this ever congressed world by forming packs or neighborhoods to join hands and live together.

As the design is based on photography, it is been edit by Adobe Photoshop CS4 and the font used is Rockwell Extra Bold.

Although as medical scholar, she did produced some artwork of bones and body structures but most of her works lies on the spiritual and mentality by showing various faces of old folks still in vendor even in armchair and smiles of homeless despite their circumstance. She also intended to raise awareness in Cambodia and Vietnam about their dilapidated medical service and system by her video “Tangible Measures”.

Awareness does not mean charity. It only shows you what you did not know of and rekindles the spark that what holds you when you were young. You only need to know and remember as there is nothing more you can help them except a donation of generosity and compassion and a fair treatment as one of the members of society.
Of the most, Madam Oestereicher wish us to show the determination and happiness of these people able to salvage and cherish even though what they own is little but it is content and hold a dear value to them.

Trimester II is NOW... with Assignment 1

For this assignment, the conceptual screen design is largely base on our interactive application menu. Due to the experience of being a user of these applications, my thought is that the menu have to be simple yet clear and fresh enough to catch eyeballs. The navigation and interactivity has to be as simple as possible for users to manage instantly.

For my two subject, I chose butterfly and portrait photography. Following is some reference for the menu screen.

From 5 interviews, most of them thought their peers as students want works to be done but not with good planning and most of them really into Facebook and attendance than other beneficial (boring) routine. Really, Microsoft Words are a trademark in written project, assignments and portfolio, folios for its convenience yet tidy and clean settings and layout.

Persona

After some interview from some former schoolmates, I made a persona based on the information obtained:

Name       Wee Tze Teng
Age          17
School      SMK Pekan Baru
Class        5 Kenari (science streamed)
Hobby      Net-surfing
Habbit      Disorganised and lack of grip in his own predicament

Current dilemma
With SPM at the not-too distant horizon yet still got assignments (we called it folios at that time) in History and Moral Studies, the biggest headache and distraction.

Personality
A quite serious student if not of his clumsiness in handling crisis and his academic management. You can say he is sort of the late night oil burner like the rest of his generation.

Project 1 Time & Space

Artist Statement

In this project, I decided to shoot a video depicted a bad day for a student when he got up late, rush to school only to find out it is holiday then finally his PC broken down taking his works along. I would like to show how a man being at the wrong place and wrong time can affect his daily routine and thus his mental state.

The whole process was recorded by Canon 500D with camera applications. Then the video is editted in Adobe After Effects CS4. The audio was extracted from various artists from free music websites like Youtube and Last.FM like classic Schumann Lotus Flower and Boots Randolph Yakety Sax. The sound effect is downloaded from Soundbible. The editting of audio is done by Adobe Soundbooth CS4, the rest of the combination of audio and video and rendering is based on After Effects.

Assignment 3 Final Artwork

STUDENT

TEACHER

Assignment 3 Artist Statement

In this assignment, I intended to show what is in the mind of young generation about student and teacher. So a survey was done on secondary school students. Based on it, I created my artwork.

For the topic "Student", a seed with  yellow, purple and shallow red and blue "S" with black surrounding indicate the current state of mind of young scholars. They are at the age of morphing from child to adult which mean they start to think maturely but their action are still of childish and naive as they are not completely adult yet they are no longer children. This torn thought and controversy might drive them to form a cocoon of which inside they enjoy their "golden years' with peers of same thought while remain uninvolved and indifferent of the outside world. In my artwork, the colours inside the seed is of joy and fun surrounded by dark dull grey reality.

For "Teacher", what the young generation see in adulthood is a complete form. A form which they admired and strived for yet afraid of the process that will change their current state of enjoyment. In order to find a illuminated solution, their heads turn to a mature and hardened yet still retain a fraction of the former youth - a teacher. They see the role of teacher as guide though they constantly defies their instructor because they know the instructor is right about the world. A teacher is like a tree that has stand the test of time and changing and still able to grow strong and live on. Small blossomings of young plants need the protection of the old tree from the storm yet still able to shed light to them by showing them how prepare themselves to treat the world.

The artworks are all Photoshop products and the font is base on Swansea.

Assignment 3 Personas

Now that I had collected my info. I started with constructing a persona to each of my topic, in this case a student and teacher.

Persona 1
Name: Muhammad Albani
Age: 34
Occupation: Teacher
Interest: Reading (newspaper, magazines)
Characteristics: Feel responsible and caring for his job and students he dealt with but can be strict at times.

Persona 2
Name: Abbas Muhammad
Age: 16
Occupation: Student
Interest: Games and Sports
Characteristics: Lazy and forgetful but only applicable to what he did not have interest. He know it is not right but he just cannot help it. No interest is no heart in doing it.

Assignment 3 Expression Through Specified Audience

To begin the expression, first I must gather information and opinions of my targeted audience regarding my topic. In this case, I chose two different topic- 'Student' and 'Teacher' for teenage students. To collect their comments, I made a survey to 12 students of Maktab Rendah Sains Mara of Transkrian in Nibong Tebal, Penang.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In this assignment, I decided to explore what is on my mind about this topic. So, I make a few simple little sketches then chose one from which I like and do some mock-up.

The assignment is done largely on Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended. I use images that I collected via D-SLR and web search, patch them up using magic wand for selective part editing and configuring and also layer mask properties to complete my work. I would like to create a nature jungle-like environment for my Type Expression so I arranged the word' BoA' (not that Korean 'BoA' please) with boa constrictor skin texture and on wooden log.

Artist Treatment

In the beginning, I decided to express my thought about my theme by 3D art. I cut a board about 10x10 inches, prepared plasticine/playdough and iron wire, and water colors. I splashed the black color on the white surface and painted white on the black surface of the board. Then I shaped the knife as if it is a twisting snake and attached the hilt and the point of knife on the board.

This expression of art should be enough to show and clarify my idea on the related topic.

Artist Statement

There are different and variety ways of interpreting the nature of light and darkness, good and evil,
God and Devil. It struck on me as the mixture of balance and life. There will be clusters of dark clouds amidst the seamless white of cloud bed and within the dark cloud there will be a Sun hidden
cover away from common eyes. In a way, you can say there are reasons and agendas of every action
taken whether it is in affect of present dilemma or past confrontation even future prospect.

Here is my say: The line between right and wrong is like a fabric so thin that even a simple knife
of probe and logic will cut it right through. Moreover, what flow out from the wound of darkness is
not necessary black and what has been spill out from the immaculate white does not entirely white
either.

To express my idea, I form a board of black and white surface stabbed by a knife but the wound from the black side bled white and beyond the surface of white the knife twisted to become a snake and it bled of black even though it was white.
